Silbury Hill
The largest artificial mound in Europe, mysterious Silbury Hill compares in height and volume to the roughly contemporary Egyptian pyramids. Probably completed in around 2400 BC, it apparently contains no burial. Though clearly important in itself, its purpose and significance remain unknown.
Silbury Hill is part of the Avebury World Heritage Site, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

West Kennet Long Barrow
One of the largest, most impressive and most accessible Neolithic chambered tombs in Britain. Built in around 3650 BC, it was used for a short time as a burial chamber, nearly 50 people being buried here before the chambers were blocked. Part of the Avebury World Heritage Site.
West Kennet Long Barrow is in private ownership and in English Heritage guardianship. It is managed by The National Trust on behalf of English Heritage, and the two organisations share the cost of managing and maintaining the property.

Hackpen Hill White Horse
The Hackpen White Horse faces west overlooking a road hairpin coming up the escarpment. Walking back along the Ridgeway, the full glory of the Barbury Castle earthworks showing in late afternoon sun if you are lucky!
The Hackpen White Horse near Broad Hinton was created to mark the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1838. The creation of a left facing Hanoverian White Horse for this occasion generated a precedent for later Wiltshire chalk horses. The white horse had, however, been dropped from coins and the royal coat of arms in 1837

The Ridgeway
The Ridgeway National Trail passes through a surprisingly remote part of southern central England. From its start in the World Heritage Site of Avebury, it follows a ridge of chalk hills in a northeasterly direction for 87 miles (139 Km) to reach Ivinghoe Beacon lying to the northwest of London. Popularly known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’, The Ridgeway still follows the same route over the high ground used since prehistoric times by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers. Today it is popular with walkers, runners, cyclists, horse riders and disabled people using mobility scooters.

The Crown Inn
The Crown is just a short walk away from The Old Bakery Annex. It is a traditional English pub that has an excellent restaurant that sells excellent pub food and has an spacious large pub garden.
The light and airy open-plan bar and a roomy, separate eating area where good home-cooked food is served is beautifully cool when the sun's out.... and fantastically cosy when the fire's on
